Preventing Heartburn During Pregnancy
Heartburn is a common condition during pregnancy. Even if you’ve never had this problem before, it can be common, especially after the second trimester of pregnancy.
Then, learn more about the causes and possible ways to find relief.
Heartburn during pregnancy
For heartburn occurs during pregnancy often due to hormonal changes. Progesterone is released in the placenta that protects the small part of the abdomen.
This hormone relaxes the oesophageal sphincter (sphincter), which prevents stomach acid or food particles from flowing back into the esophagus. As a result, reflux often occurs during pregnancy, which can be very uncomfortable.
In addition, the growing baby needs more and more space and fills the entire abdominal region. The pressure created in this way also causes stomach acid or food particles to flow back into the esophagus.
Tips against heartburn during pregnancy
You now know the causes of reflux in pregnancy and you can imagine that the symptoms can often not be prevented.
However, with various tips you can at least find relief and alleviate the uncomfortable feeling.
During pregnancy, the body needs more time to digest. For this reason , we recommend that you do not eat too much or too lavishly.
It is better to take smaller portions several times a day.
Consume enough water, but not with meals. Don’t forget that a healthy diet is essential during this time. If you fill your stomach with water, you will be full quickly. It also expands the stomach and increases the risk of heartburn.
Try to bed your upper body a little higher during the night. You can just put a couple of pillows under it or raise the headboard of the bed.
This can help prevent heartburn while you sleep, as the fluid does not flow upwards.
You should avoid the following foods and drinks during pregnancy:
- carbonated soft drinks
- excessive consumption of citrus fruits and acidic drinks as well as spicy foods (lemon, grapefruit, orange, vinegar, hot sauces, pepper)
- Caffeine (coffee, black tea, green tea, chocolate, iced coffee …) and cola drinks
There are many over-the-counter or prescription heartburn medicines available on the market. Under no circumstances should you take any medication without first consulting your doctor!
Self-medication is always inadvisable, especially during pregnancy.
You also know that alcohol and tobacco are taboo during pregnancy. These vices are very harmful not only to you, but also to your baby! Among other things, it also increases heartburn.
Finally, a few simple recommendations:
- Do not bend your body forward after eating. If you need to pick something up, bend your knees.
- If you want to take a nap, wait a little after you eat. First, go for a walk around the house or sit down. But remain in an upright position for a while until digestion is complete.
