Keep your baby warm

Newborns are not yet able to regulate their body temperature properly on their own. That is why you always have to make sure that they feel comfortable and that they are neither too warm nor too cold.

They usually get cold quickly because they still have little body fat and are sensitive to cold for other reasons. For example, the skin is still very thin  and the ratio of weight to height is much larger than that of adults. This also affects the body temperature.

In addition, small babies still eat relatively little. Therefore, they can not produce too much heat from  eating. Your body temperature will therefore drop quickly.

This is how you can keep your baby warm

You don’t have to wrap your child in multiple blankets or keep the windows closed all the time. With the following tips you can keep your baby warm and protect against diseases at the same time.

How do you measure the temperature?

You don’t have to have a thermometer at hand all the time, just know which part of the body you can feel the temperature on.

The best way to check your child’s temperature is on their neck, arms, legs, or chest. Hands and feet are not suitable for this. Because here the temperature is always cooler, as these body parts are not yet well supplied with blood.

The onion technique

When choosing clothes for your baby, you can take advantage of the onion peel principle. If you combine different items of clothing correctly, you can easily take off a jacket or sweater for your child when it is too warm.

Don’t forget to wear a cap to protect your ears!

A warm, relaxing bath

When preparing the bath for your baby, you should check the water temperature. We recommend around 36 ° C.

Unborn babies are used to this temperature in the womb, so it is recommended by neonatologists. Prepare your clothes too, and make sure the bathroom is warm.

Do not bathe your child for more than 3 to 5 minutes. Then dry it well and carefully, and dress it up quickly to retain its body heat.

Control the temperature in your home

The temperature should be 24ºC, especially in the rooms where the baby is most of the time. However, never place the cot next to a radiator! This could harm the little one’s health.

Ventilate the room daily so that new air can enter the room. Brief ventilation is sufficient in winter. This is how you can prevent your child from catching a cold.
