The 7 most common problems in newborns

All parents want their child to be born healthy. But even if this is the case, certain complications and problems in newborns can occur shortly afterwards .

Because they are so small, problems in newborns can be very uncomfortable and sometimes even dangerous.

There are many complications that can affect the health of a newborn baby without leading to serious illness. Sometimes it requires treatment with medication. Then it is important that all deviations from normal are carefully observed.

Jaundice

One of the most common problems in newborns is jaundice. It is estimated that it occurs in around 70% of all infants. It subsides after up to 10 days.

Jaundice usually occurs in the first 3 days of life.  It is caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood, which is why the yellowish discoloration of the skin is the most typical symptom.

Jaundice can occur as early as the first 24 hours after the birth. It does not require medication and in most cases has subsided after 7 days.

fever

Fever can be a serious problem because it can be dangerous for a newborn. A high fever can also indicate a more serious problem.

However, a certain increase in temperature is normal after the birth due to the changed environment of the baby.

This type of fever occurs in the first 3 days of life. The baby regulates its body temperature and adapts to its new environment.

In this case, it will continue to drink and stay healthy. Adequate hydration is especially important now. In this case, too, the baby’s condition usually normalizes on its own after a few days.

Problems in newborns

Constantly changing sleep rhythm

The sleep rhythm of newborns is still very regular. Most of the day her eyes are closed. They fall asleep quickly after eating and are then not easily disturbed.

In the evening and at night, however, newborns usually have difficulty falling asleep. Exactly when the parents are tired and want to go to bed, they become active and are awake.

This is normal because the baby’s rhythm was already in the womb. During the day the mother moved, causing the amniotic fluid to rock and lulling the baby to sleep. But when the mother has kept quiet and slept, the baby has woken up.

That is why babies have exactly this rhythm in the first days of life.

It takes about 4 weeks for babies to get used to being awake during the day and sleeping at night.

Common problems in newborns

Spit

It may unsettle first-time mothers, but babies spitting up is normal. Almost all babies spit out some of the milk they drank. Babies swallow air when they drink and it has to come out again, so it’s normal for a little milk to come out with them.

To prevent this from happening, it is important that you help your baby breathe again immediately after feeding. But not only too much air in the stomach can lead to spitting. It may be a sign of other complaints or even colic.

Difficulty urinating

There is cause for concern if a baby does not urinate within 48 hours of birth. We usually notice when a baby is peeing because the moisture that leaks out makes them cry.

A baby urinates up to 10 times a day.

If the baby urinates weakly or starts leaking immediately afterwards, this could be a sign of complications in the bladder or kidney area.

Inconsolable crying

As newborn babies adjust to their new surroundings, it is quite normal for them to cry a lot. The smallest unpleasant things irritate them. So we should keep reminding ourselves that crying is really your only form of communication at this stage.

The baby cries when he is hungry, tired or when he wants to have the diaper changed. All of this is normal.

However, when the crying takes on a sharp and uncontrolled tone, then we should rule out more serious causes such as infection or difficulty urinating. You can seek advice from your doctor and so calm yourself down as well.

Problems in newborns

Irregular bowel activity

Parents are quick to worry about their baby’s bowel movements with their first child. They analyze color, consistency, regularity and everything else. For the first 3 days, it is normal for the child’s stool to be black or greenish.

It is also normal for it to be a little slimy and for the baby to empty its bowels up to 8 times a day. It should be ensured that the child does not suffer from constipation. A hard stool and constipation can be painful and traumatic.

On the other hand, a permanently liquid stool is also not normal if babies are exclusively breastfed.
